What You Can Do Now to Prepare for These Careers
- Find a mentor: A mentor is someone who can help you achieve your potential and reach your goals. Look for someone who is successful in an area related to your interest, and someone who is willing to give you information that you need to achieve success.
- Strengthen your language skills: Good speaking and writing skills are essential, especially for interviewing and writing personal statements for entrance into educational and job opportunities.
- In high school, take college preparation courses, and get broad exposure to math and science.
- Volunteer in your area of interest: Find someone who will let you shadow him/her at work to become familiar with the career. The advantages of such volunteering are that 1) you will learn if this career really interests you; 2) you will demonstrate the qualities of initiative and determination to future employers or school admissions committees.
